1 Corinthians says “Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is FREEDOM”.
Isaiah 61:1 says “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim freedom to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
God is all about removing people from a life of control, bondage and manipulation and placing them squarely in a life of freedom. He sent Isaiah to the people to proclaim FREEDOM and to open the prison to those who are bound. When God shows up the resulting effect on a life is freedom.
I was thinking about the children of Israel living in Egypt under a Pharaoh ruler that was fearful of their power and their numeric growth. Pharaoh had them in bondage as slaves. Working the fields and building massive structures for the Egyptian monarchy. Their life consisted of external control, degradation, manipulation and external forces dictating their future. God sent Moses as the deliverer to His people in Egypt. Leading them out of this state of bondage into a state of freedom where they could love God and love each other without the control of another king. As the people of God made their way out of Egypt it became quite apparent that the people couldn’t handle the freedom. Every obstacle and every challenge was met with a grumbling, complaining, whining response. In fact at some points during their journey they even requested to go back to the place of bondage in Egypt for at least they would have food to eat and water to drink. Their freedom did not inspire them to create and to rely on God. It was amazing how challenges reverted their thinking back to the bondage of Egypt and even convinced them that the Egyptian lifestyle was acceptable and preferred over freedom.
Freedom is defined as “exemption from external control, interference, regulation, etc., the power to determine action without restraint”. Freedom is a powerful place in life. It is not license to act however you wish or do whatever you want without consequence. Freedom comes with responsibility. But more importantly we have to accept the freedom we have been given without reverting back to bondage.
Just being FREE does not mean that you have shifted your mindset to freedom.
While the purpose of your life is to live FREE – you have a choice to make. Are you going to live under the control of outward, external forces or are you going to accept that you have a choice? Quite often I meet people who have been given a second chance. They have a new lease on life to conquer financially, to live free from the pains and ails of their past, to enjoy health when they have been sick yet one of the most amazing things to watch is how their mind goes back to the places that were controlling them in the past. Like a prisoner set free from incarceration seeking to return to the controlled life of prison, they return mentally to the days of control.
God has sent FREEDOM our way and now we must grab hold of it and live in it. You are in charge of making the decision to live free. Allow yourself to take the liberty to dream, to pursue and to create. Make the decision to leave the past in the past and own the freedom you have been given.
To walk in Freedom you must:
- Understand that your freedom comes with responsibility
- Realize that your future is in your grasp
- Know that every challenge you face is meant to strengthen you and teach you
- Defend the freedom by making choices to keep controlling forces out of your life
- Make a stand for righteousness and proclaim victory over every adversary
- Give yourself permission to dream and have vision for your life
- Take action to realize those dream
